Sunday 15 Azar, 6th of December, is a public holiday in Iran [Eyd-e Ghadir].
BOTH the ministry of education and ministry of higher education just announced that they are CLOSING schools onĀ Saturday, 14 Azar as well. All government offices have also been required to give their employees a day off if the employees so wish.
This means that on Monday, 16 Azar, the day of the student demonstrations, many students will be away on holiday OR as far as workers and employees are concerned, not able to take some of the day off having just gotten back after a 4 day holiday [Thursday (some government offices, all universities and some schools are closed on Thursdays), Friday, Saturday and Sunday]. More importantly, this will also mean that the crucial days before the demonstrations, all schools will be closed and students will not have the chance to do last minute planning. As you may remember, the week before 13 Aban, students at high schools and universities across Iran were busy holding small gatherings and protests.
This was suddenly announced after a cabinet meeting, and both ministries stated that this was so “students and their families could more easily participate in the eid festivities.”
