A Poem for Sohrab Arabi
Mar 16th, 2010 by pedestrian
Sir: garlic, Serkeh: vinegar, Sib: apple, Samanoo: wheat pudding, Somagh: sumac, Senjed: the dried fruit of the oleaster tree, Sabzeh: lentil sprouts
… These are the seven items we place on the Haft Seen [literally translates to the "seven S's"] for our new year. The blogger at A Chaotic Mind has written a beautiful poem for the mother of Sohrab Arabi. Sohrab, who was killed in the post-election demonstrations.

There’s the garlic,
the vinegar,
the apple,
she’s cooked the samanoo herself.
I can see the sumac, and the sprouts and the senjed too.
But,
this year,
you’re not with us,
one “s” is missing.
Do you see, my son?
From this year,
to forever,
your mother’s Haft Seen
will have no Sohrab …

heart-rending
