I wonder what they mean by “Scenes”

Sign: “To protect and respect Islamic guidelines, we are unable to give bicycles to the honorable females”.
Iran Nameh reports that following an article in the conservative publication, “Ebrathayeh Ashoora” [Lessons from Ashura] in the city of Esfahan, bicycles are no longer rented to females.
One of the things I’ve enjoyed about Esfahan very recently, were the bicycles that you could rent in the city, a luxury not found in many places in Iran … and no longer in Esfahan it seems.
The publication wrote: “the new bicycle facilities organized by the municipality in Imam Square, has caused some foreign tourists, native tourists and even families to rent out bicycles and give them to women and girls. This has created some very worrying, improper scenes in this holy square.”
Iran Nameh reports that all the bicycles facilities in the city have stopped lending bikes to females.
I’m certainly no Esfahan expert, but it strikes me as a very conservative city, so the publication’s claim that “both the olama [ayatollahs] and the people” have been “very worried” about this latest development, could actually be true.

retarded by religion
when i was there last year, i borrowed my friends bike and we rode around, it was quite fun. oh well they will be losing money for their own business.
I’m just trying to visualise the ‘improper scenes’ caused by women on bicycles………are they prone to riding with their feet on the handlebars or doing wheelies or something?
Very admiring – the state-of-the-art environmentally-friendly and progressive measure of “rent-a-bike” adopted by the municipality of Esfahan ! Pity, that there are obviously misanthropes to whom really any kind of the least and most modest enjoyment of life seems to be a crime. Some people’s only imaginable mode of living seems to revel in spreading despondency and depression among their fellow citizens.
sar, I’m afraid that what makes these fools so dangerous is that the financial aspect isn’t even an issue for them.
Kate, I think by “scene” they mean the female’s behind on a bicycle … I think!
Publicola, yes, indeed. It was very slowly beginning to catch on and families would be seen renting bikes …. now it’s all over! X-(
…..what the…?……..so – does it apply to everywhere now? I mean are women allowed to cycle at all ? oh that’s such a shame.
Now there’s a new business opportunity – making some kind of tent covering to go over a bike – doesn’t bear thinking about.
ha! somewhere I see a very young entrepreneur with that light bulb shining above his head!
reading the commentaries 5 and 6:
ROFLMAO
[= rolling on the floor laughing my ass off]
Exactly what we (sometimes) often need – thanks !
In Britain, bicycles were new in the 1880s, and cycling was a big opportunity for women to gain more freedom. Bloomers, a kind of baggy trousers, were invented so that girls could ride bicycles whithout showing any glimpse of leg.
No doubt the appalling “scenes” referred to are glimpses of ankles.
Don, the females have to be covered in long shirts (at least to above the knees) and pants … hate to sound like a pervert, but I think they just mean the shadow of the girls’ behind on the bike, even with all the clothes … you gotta know how their minds work
